Puree

So, I dived into my new cookbook Deceptively Delicious.  I made my purees last night and made our first deceptive meal. We had tuna salad on non wheat wraps with tomato and lettuce. They turned out so good.  The secret hiding puree was cauliflower that I put in the tuna. The kids and the hubby had no idea.  Perfect.  I have carrot, sweet potato, squash, cauliflower and pineapple puree.  This morning I am going to try the apple muffins with carrot puree.

I would love to post recipes but probably shouldn’t since it would probably violate some copy write laws.  So far I recommend the cookbook but will try more recipes to see how they really work. Oh, I have one child who is freaking out over the fact that I might be putting something gross in our food, so I really need to be secretive with her. I tell you, if you have younger children you might have an easier time of it. When they get older they get smarter and it is difficult to keep things from them.  Plus they know how to read and they look over my shoulder.  Stinkers.

House update: nothing. nada. zilch. zero lookers.  Open house Saturday. Please pray.

Food

Ok, so based on my last post, I may not be a fan of a bunch of photographs of flowers, but food, I can do.

This is a close up of the large batch we picked last week.  I didn’t make jam like I usually do because of time and energy needed (and the open house) but we ate a good portion of these as well as froze the rest to make smoothies. I think that will be a summer staple and I am afraid they won’t last through the summer.  Oh well, next up is blueberry picking next week.

This was a past dish I threw together with the vegetables I received in our organic box.  I really like seeing what I can come up with that comes in the box.  We are on break for the summer but will be getting it again in the fall. I have a small garden planted and will get lots of tomatoes. If I get enough I will can some.

I think I realized something about myself, in regards to photos of flowers verses photos of food. I love flowers, wish I had some more around my yard, but I don’t really like to garden, and I don’t much care for bugs or dirt.  However, I love food. I love to eat food and make food.  Photos of food inspire me. I always wish a cook book has a photo to accompany the recipe.  Funny huh?

Oh, and if you are interested in how I made this I will tell you as best as I can remember. I cooked the penne, because that is the kind of pasta I had on hand.  I boiled the green vegetables very slightly and then threw them into a pan with hot oil and sauted the rest of the way. I used small red and yellow peppers and toasted them in the toaster oven and chopped them up and threw them in the pan.  I added salt and black pepper, probably some garlic powder and basil.  Finally I tossed it together with grated Parmesan cheese.  Yummy!

Food again

Is it just me or is food getting more expensive?  Or is it that I have more children than 10 years ago, or that maybe said children are getting bigger and are eating more like an adult?  Whatever the reason is, it seems as if I cannot keep food in the house, and it seems as if I keep running out of money to keep food in the house.  Am I the only one with this problem?  I only have three children. How do families of 5, 6, 7, 8 or more children do it?  Well, I better go see what I can find for these kids to eat.  Maybe I can make a tomato paste soup?

Food Help! Please!

I’m in a funk. I have no idea what to feed my kids for lunches. I am a sandwich girl. I like to just throw lunch together. I am not into actually cooking a hot meal for lunch.  I have a child who doesn’t like sandwiches. She also may be lactose intolerant so we are off dairy for now. What can I fix for lunch?  Help. Please throw ideas my way!
