Since I got back from LA from a wonderful 5 day visit alone (did you hear that? ALONE) with my baby sister (and I mean that, since we are 15 years apart) I haven’t been so motivated to continue school with the girls. After 5 days in warmth and sunshine, which is finally starting to happen here in the Northwest, the idea of bookwork and reading and math, well, they just didn’t seem so fun. I plugged along at bare minimum for the last few weeks doing a little math with the girls, going to the library and getting lots of books and doing some writing. I was actually thinking, can’t we just be done for the year? No, that wouldn’t go over well with the principle of our little homeschool, so I didn’t even ask.
Then yesterday I went to a used bookstore and stumbled across a homeschool section. It was quite small considering the vast bookshelves and piles of books on the floor, but boy did they have some treasures. I found three books, the most exciting being the Evan Moor History Pockets on Ancient Civilizations. Wow! Can I say that again? Wow. For $4.00 I have found that pick me up that will motivate all of us to finish off the school year with a bang. We finished our Story of the World, Ancient Times so this is the perfect wrap up. I am so excited. We started today and the girls and I had a great time.
It’s nearing the end of the year, and if you are wrapping up some subjects and are finding it difficult to keep going, might I suggest getting something new. I know it is exactly what I needed. Remember how in September how you have been collecting materials for the last six months and you just can’t wait to get started? Why wait. Grab something new and get going. The excitement will be there even if it is May. A short unit study just may be the thing to propel you forward for the next month in a half or more, depending on your schedule.

i have considered buying those history pockets before. you’ll have to post some of the fun things you do with them. i’ve often found that some small change will help get you through.
I love evan-moor stuff. It’s usually pretty light and lot’s of fun. We’ve used phonics Fundamentals on 3 of the kids (so far) to teach reading. VERY SIMPLE!
Glad you got some wind in your sails.

Hey! You crafty person you! I’m glad you found something to excite you these last few weeks. We’re doing Math, LA and reading (reading our history/sci) but no projects or experiments or timelines! I’m so DONE!

Okay, okay, OKAY! I won’t give up now. I want to, but I won’t. This whole new house thing and being further behind than I want and also knowing that I will have to take many breaks in the next couple of months makes me want to be finished for the year.
But I won’t.
I really do need to just pray and get my bootay in gear. I totally understand what you mean about September! *sigh* And we school year-round… but there is just something about September! I get so gung-ho about everything…and we all know that enthusiasm is contagious.
The plan for Monday, continue with our lessons. And make time for some fun stuff too– you know, the play where they don’t even know they’re learning!
Have a great week, Susan!
Love,
Marsha– who baked a little too long in the CA sun today. But I didn’t bake alone, my dh and kidlets are with me.
Hi there
We’ve used that book before; the kids loved it!
And you’re right about the whole “weight lifted” thing from cutting down on the blogging. What an easy trap it is.
Blessings to you,
Keri
